“Lucha Libre” – the project by Julia Kurek, which makes up the „Santa Muerte” exhibition in Gdańsk, stems from her residency in Mexico. In a series of four exhibitions, the artist, omitting what’s easily discernible, tries to capture the hidden paradoxes of the reality intrinsic to that country. Lucha libre is a name of a popular sports entertainment in Mexico that can be translated as “free fight” or “freestyle wrestling”, the show balances between theatre and wrestling. Lucha libre is like a magnifying glass, it reveals a lot about what Mexico is. The fight creates reality based on illusion. While “luchadores” fight live, before the very eyes of the public, a spectacle is being unravelled, a theatre  of Mexican society moral dilemma. The “Lucha Libre” project is, in a way, a story about Mexico, an attempt of telling it as it’s seen emotionally by the people on the street and fearing society.
