Eliza Proszczuk – Embroideries and identities
1–21 December 2017

“Emroideries and identities” – a project by Eliza Proszczuk conducted in Strasbourg – consisted of workshops and performative actions. The artist invited women of different origins and background, living in Alsace region (including Strasbourg) to finish the sentence: Je me définis comme… - I define myself as… The participants of the workshops have been embroidering their answers on a common piece of black fabric, which was later turned into a woman’s symbol of Alsace – a big bow. The Alsatian bows, worn by women from the 19th century as a decorative element, were also an indication of social affiliation. The workshops took place in various urban spaces, including: galleries, cultural centers, as well as in cafes, hair salons, etc.

Eliza Proszczuk conducted her project within the artistic residency at Apollonia – European Art Exchanges, in frames of the artist residency exchange program, started in 2011 by Apollonia Association in Strasbourg, City of Strasbourg, City of Gdansk and LAZNIA Centre for Contemporary Art. Previous editions of this bilateral exchange program had following participants: Ahmet Dogan, Patrick Bogner, Jia Qiu and Dorothee Haller, Yiumsiri Vantanapindu, Stéphane Clor and Élise Alloin. Among Polish artists going to Strasbourg were: Dominika Skutnik, Dorota Walentynowicz, Michał Pecko, Angelika Fojtuch, Grzegorz Stefański and Urszula Kozak.
