LAZNIA 1 2010 - Kyungwoo Chun THOUSANDS
Opening 26.11.2010, at 6 p.m.
Curator: Jadwiga Charzyńska
Co-ordination: Jolanta Woszczenko

The exhibition is a search for one’s roots, and the contemplation of the role of the individual in the context of characteristic mechanisms in different systems of government. Kyungwoo Chun is from South Korea, a country divided between two government systems, and therefore has the right to engage in such a discourse.

The idea of solidarity is very important for him and his compatriots, not only from a historical and political point of view but also, what’s more important, from a social one. The Złoty Stół (Golden Table) project aims to portray the personal thoughts of a thousand residents of Gdansk on how the Solidarity movement affected their lives. The artist also created a replica of the historic Round Table, using notes made by the thousand residents of Gdansk.

The second element of the exposition is a series of photographs entitled “Thousands”, depicting a thousand small portraits of a thousand different people sharing the surname Chun, meaning “thousand” in English. The artist found these people in small villages in the Chinese province of Henan. The artist claims that four centuries ago (sixteen generations earlier) one of his ancestors emigrated from China to Korea and settled there. Chun wanted to capture the individual image of every single one of the thousand people during a minute, so that every movement and passage of time became more visible in more or less blurred images.

On 26th of September 2010 at 7 p.m. there will be a lecture about the exhibition led by Jiyoon Lee, independent curator specialised in Korean art.

On 16th of December 2010 at 7 p.m. there will be a Korean video presentation.
