“Reed Read / Smouldering transactions” project proceeds from the mythological story of the discretion of Midas’s hairdresser who, feeling that he may betray Midas’s trust, dug a hole in the earth and spoke into it whereby he laid his secret, only to have the secret broadcast to the world via the whispering reeds which grew over the hole.
Inspired by this story, the artists will attempt to explore re-interpreting of data found in randomness and the use of those interpretations combining sensory art and engineering.
About the artists
Raewyn Turner & Brian Harris
Through their work as an artistic tandem, Raewyn Turner & Brian Harris question human relationships to the world of sensory substitutions, digital synesthesia and technology. They create experimental and sensory works that consider emerging issues using a combination of art, science and technology. Focused on the sense of smell, their works explore the fragrance of contemporary existence, illusion and sense-making in a largely visual culture.
In their own words:
‘’we’re interested in subliminal odors, airborne particles, other senses referring to old powers, other knowledge systems and common alchemy that affect minds and emotions. We want to bring sub sensory signals and their ‘equivalents’ into perception. It is in the auditory, visual and olfactory signals outside the human bandwidth where important information is relayed. These unconscious signals are contemporary cyphers that can affect our mood and behavior, the ways we interact, love and reflect on ourselves and society.’’
Their recent works have been shown in the frames of international exhibitions and workshops including Parque de las Ciencias, Granada, Spain or the 25th Annual Wallace Art Awards in New Zealand, among others.
