„𝟜𝟘𝕩𝟜𝟘”
is the first online painting tournament in Poland (and the world!), which gives viewers the possibility to analyse and interpret a PAINTING in a safe online environment and friendly atmosphere.
The programme also encourages participants to start their own art collection by competing for attractive prizes!!!
The tournament will take place live on Instagram, for a week starting from 17th JULY, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.!
The “40x40” online painting tournament is an entertainment programme inspired by popular quiz shows and other television formats based on the premise of the participants competing (physically or intellectually) for valuable prizes to the delight of viewers. The game proposed by the artist is meant to direct the online public’s attention to paintings presented in the studio, which will be the subject of the riddle. Participants will attempt to interpret the work, thereby guessing its title – the paintings are created based on subjects taken from popular culture, and the artist/presenter is ready to offer various clues, if necessary. The prize for guessing the title correctly is the work of art itself, made on canvas measuring 40x40cm, which gave the show its title.
The artist would like to generate interest in art and build the usually non-existent relationship between artist and recipient, while at the same time encouraging the audience to attempt to analyse and interpret the work. The prize will be of a special nature, as the winner will receive a work with which they have already established a bond, as proved by guessing the title. This action would also add value to the painting in the eyes of the audience – after all, these are the prizes the participants compete for.
Martynka Dagmarka
Born in 1993 in Grajewo, a small town in Podlasie, which could have largely affected her outlook on the world. She studied graphic arts and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Her creative practice involves observing the existing fragment of reality and attempting to influence it, using her (modest) means. She spends a lot of time wandering around the Internet. Winner of this year’s “Szybki Egipt” competition, held as part of the Idź na całość exhibition at the Gdańsk City Gallery. She took part in a number of exhibitions and projects, but she doesn’t really have anything to boast about. She uses the feminine gender out of habit, but thinks this should be a matter of choice. She wrote this text in the third person, because she thought that’s how one ought to write a bio.
WINDOWS 2020. NEW PHENOMENA
A SERIES OF EXHIBITIONS IN THE PUBLIC SPACE / LKW GALLERY
Climate marches, wildfires, melting glaciers, animal species going extinct, mutating viruses and life under lockdown, plus the ongoing threat of terrorism, fear of strangers and recurring nationalist tendencies… One could say that we’re living in “interesting times”, when dystopian visions become reality. In order to survive, on the one hand, we tend to go in denial, gradually adapt to the situation, escape into cyberspace and dream about flying to Mars, and on the other, we feel a growing personal rebellion and fear at what’s still to come, and try to make a change.
For the next six months, the LKW Gallery window will serve as a “Black Mirror” of sorts – showcasing the visions of six young artists from the Gdańsk-Sopot-Gdynia area, their commentary on the current situation and how they imagine the foreseeable future. We will give the floor to a young generation of artists, enabling them to present their personal reactions to subjects they find most absorbing. Perhaps art might serve as a remedy, provoke reflection – or maybe it will just serve as an ironic remark?
The LKW Gallery space will act as a window where you’ll be able to look from the outside at sculptures, installations, interventions, video works and performances – but it will also serve as a broadcasting studio for artistic actions.
Using any medium they choose, each of the invited artists will prepare their own show, with the audience being composed of both art consumers and accidental passers-by.
