Fantine Andrès "Archaeology of the Future"
Francisco Peró Domeyko "Silent Nature"
Anna Kędziora "The Riverbeds_working River/Working River"
We open our doors to three exhibitions focusing on the theme of environment and landscape change by Fantine Andrès, Francisco Peró Domeyko and Anna Kędziora. The Chilean artist in his video work will talk about the Atacama Desert in Chile and the effects of human activities of man on its Martian landscape. Fantine Andrès will present drawings dealing with climate change observed in her native Strasbourg and during her stay in Gdansk. The works will be accompanied by scientific objects by Dr Aleksandra Zgrundo of the University of University of Gdansk. Polish artist Anna Kędziora will show photographs and objects related to her explorations focused on the Rhine River - a working river,
one of the busiest waterways in Europe, created as a result of a residency residency in autumn 2022.
Francisco Peró Domeyko's exhibition “Silent Nature” is part of the Cities on the Edge series CCA ŁAŹNIA. The starting point of the Chilean artist's project is a chronicle written by Ignatius Domeyko about a place in the Atacama Desert in Chile, known today as the Domeyko Range. In the work “Silent Nature”, the geologist's texts will be confronted with the current situation, showing the changes that have taken place in the landscape. The project touches on issues of ecology, climate change and the destruction of nature through industrial human activity.
Cans of Coca-Cola, cigarette butts, hair, shells thrown up on the seashore as if in a
as a result of a peculiar cataclysm. Fantine Andrès's drawings, which refer to elements of the landscape and ecosystem of the Baltic Sea, transform reality, create fantastic stories using well-known and recognisable man-made objects in juxtaposition with elements of nature. She creates new narratives and confronts the viewer with an alternative version of her observations, which is a starting point for a deeper reflection on ecological disaster and the impact of human activity on the environment. The monochrome still lifes, on the one hand, amaze and, on the other, disgust. They juxtapose what is beautiful with what is commonly considered to be ugly, repulsive, rejected.
Fantine Andrès' working model is methodological and structured, her process begins by documenting selected objects, which she then photographs, emphasising their texture, colour and light. She creates a library of images. In addition to Fantine Andrès' drawings, the exhibition will feature the scientific collection of dr Alexandra Zgrundo of the Institute of Oceanography at the University of Gdansk, with whom the artist established a collaboration during her residency in Gdansk.
Anna Kędziora has titled her exhibition 'The Riverbeds_working River' consistently continuing her interest in the landscape in the context of power, trauma or loss. The photographs, objects and installations presented, weave stories of the construction of her own relationship with the river. The river Rhine, a working river, a river that is powerfull, life-giving but also threatened. A river that is one of the hardest-working in the world and therefore so economically important. Anna Kędziora talks about plans for the Rhine and what is irretrievably disappearing. The works refer to our anthropopression and the impossibility of withdrawing and verifying goals. The artist analyses the linguistic sphere associated with water, deciphers concepts, interprets terms that reflect human relationships with rivers, and searches for meanings and contexts.
Fantine Andrès and Anna Kedziora's exhibition is the result of a 3-month residency held in autumn 2022, as part of the artist-in-residence exchange project run since 2011 by the association Apollonia - European Art Exchanges from Strasbourg, the City of Strasbourg, the City of Gdańsk and the ŁAŹNIA Centre for Contemporary Art. Previous editions have featured Ahmet Dogan, Patrick Bogner, Jia Qiu, Dorothee Haller, Yiumsiri Vantanapindu, Stéphane Clor, Hélène Thiennot, Elise Alloin, Aurélie Pertusot, Laurent Odelain. Polish artists included: Dominika Skutnik, Dorota Walentynowicz, Michał Pecko, Angelika Fojtuch, Grzegorz Stefański, Urszula Kozak, Eliza Proszczuk, Julita Wójcik, Patrycja Orzechowska and Barbara Gryka.
