In 1949, Julian Tuwim, while in exile, composed “Polish Flowers” (“Kwiaty polskie”). Tuwim wrote with longing for his homeland, with a pen full of rage and opposition to the political realities of post-war Poland. The work, published exactly 70 years ago, served as inspiration for the artist Luka Rayski, who created a project of paper for packaging flowers in commemoration of the anniversary of the first free elections in 1989. Flower paper is not only a literal reference to the title of Tuwim’s work, but also an item that invokes the values of egalitarianism and solidarity. Rayski’s work is an object accessible to everyone and dedicated to everyone. Is there a more graceful way to honour another human being than giving them a bouquet of flowers?
